October, November, & December of 1946

Day Date Entry REMARKS 

Tuesday 10/1/1946 Hair done & some shopping – Helbings & Bursey’s came over for a while. 

 Wednesday 10/2/1946 Bridge at Barretts, after working all day. 

 Thursday 10/3/1946 Cleaned house all day. 

 Friday 10/4/1946 Washed windows & cleaned. Jerre Joan Burks was born today – Jack S. taking piano & voice. Geo taking violin. Oh my. Geo says he’s best speller in room. 

 Saturday 10/5/1946 Waxed floors. Coffee with Neta. 

 Sunday 10/6/1946 Cleaned, Cooked, took nap. Ol planted onions. We went to Dr. Helbings in eve. Oma Foley’s sister passed away. 

 Monday 10/7/1946 Laundry – Tried to get things done, but didn’t. Visited Marjorie Burks in Hospital. 

 Tuesday 10/8/1946 Worked – Saw Dr. Helbing. He said I was OK. Attended Oma’s sister’s funeral. Dressmaker – Mrs. Bursey’s for flowers. Bought Joan rubber doll. 

 Wednesday 10/9/1946 Worked all morn. Bridge in afternoon at Mamie Parker’s. I won everything – Worked. Lillian, maid at office helped me. 

 Thursday 10/10/1946 Lillian again today – Had letter from Ollie. Glen is in Hospital for check up. Looks bad. Must be his lungs. Ol on country funeral. Sis picture show. Glenn had problems with his lungs resulting from USS IINDIANAPOLIS sinking. 

Friday 10/11/1946 Ol goes to Wichita on funeral. Alice M. goes with him & stays alnight with Elsie. I kept Joan. She was just as good as she could be. 

 Saturday 10/12/1946 Sis comes home. Also gets letter from Geo asking her to come to China for a year. Sis is worried. Birthday was nice – Lunch with Neta, coffee with Ma. Dinner with Horace Carswells. Parents of Medal of Honor winner that Carswell AFB was named for. According to Short Bio Jr. died Oct. 26,’44. 

Sunday 10/13/1946 I worked all day getting ready for 1907 Study Club tomorrow. Burseys to have dinner with us. 

 Monday 10/14/1946 Study Club here. Ol & I drove over to Weatherford tonight getting miles on ambulance. Jack & Oliver worked all night. 

 Tuesday 10/15/1946 Town had hair done – rain. 

 Wednesday 10/16/1946 Night Club at Bursey’s 

 Thursday 10/17/1946 Garden Club 

 Friday 10/18/1946 Cleaned pantry Football game, Ol, Geo & I 

 Saturday 10/19/1946 Coffee with Neta – Visited Marzelle – Her sister, Cara very low. Ol went to stag party 

 Sunday 10/20/1946 Cooked all day. Ol left about 3 P.M. to take Pete Yount to Okla. For burial. 

 Monday 10/21/1946 Cora Amyette Cooke died early this morn. I helped today with Jack & Marjorie’s little girl while Marzelle was at Cora’s. 

 Tuesday 10/22/1946 Ol got home late last night. Cora’s funeral today. Sis stayed with Marjorie. 

 Wednesday 10/23/1946 Bridge Club at Mildred Switzer’s 

 Thursday 10/24/1946 Attended 1st judging show (flowers) at library. Learned lots. 

 Friday 10/25/1946 2nd day of school. Interesting – Sis had stork shower in eve for Shirley Moates. 

 Saturday 10/26/1946 Glen went home today from hosp. Took Velma Vinzant to Antique show – Coffee with Neta – Played bridge with Bursey’s - Geo to Dr. for change of glasses. 

 Sunday 10/27/1946 Sunday School – Glad to see every one. Ol had to work – I slept all afternoon - picked up pecans late. Sis made cake – We took it to Ma’s – got Joan out of bed. 

 Monday 10/28/1946 Andy Herring died this morn – Heart attackt. I cleaned all morn. 1907 Study Club – picture show in eve – Ol worked in garden 

 Tuesday 10/29/1946 Ol & I went to Plano. Ol helped conduct Andy’s funeral – Stopped back by Dallas – Ate dinner at Jay’s Marine Grill. 

 Wednesday 10/30/1946 Worked all day – Club at Garrison’s in eve. Lillian helped me today – Claire came in – Ol works in garden all week. 

 Thursday 10/31/1946 Claire & I went to town this morn. She left at 1 P.M. for Cleveland, Ohio Camp fire. Kids all out for Halloween. 

 Friday 11/1/1946 Worked in yard – rained some – Geo stayed home from school with asthma – Ol went to foot ball game. 

 Saturday 11/2/1946 Raining so hard all day, we didn’t go to Neta’s for coffee. Joan gets cuter every day – Ol goes to stag party. 

 Sunday 11/3/1946 Ol goes to Taylor on Service 

 Monday 11/4/1946 Rain – Com. meeting for Garden Club at Lellas 

 Tuesday 11/5/1946 Hair done – Visited Lady Lions – Sure had a good time – Picture show in eve. Got peppers from Mrs. Bursey. 

 Wednesday 11/6/1946 Sunshine. Laundry, Bridge Club at 12 Noon at Lollie Wyatts. Ma’s for Coffee, Bridge at B. Burks in eve. Sis bought Mahogony chest of drawers $35.00. 

 Thursday 11/7/1946 Laundry, Beautiful day – took shirts to Becky to iorn. Sent Sis to Dallas to get clay for Marvin. Ollie thinks it will be wonderful for him. 

 Friday 11/8/1946 Just picked up. 

 Saturday 11/9/1946 Coffee with Neta – Cleaned house. 

 Sunday 11/10/1946 Slept late – cooked – Ol Geo & I went riding in truck in country. Had late lunch – Winnie & Mary came by in evening. 

 Monday 11/11/1946 Laundry – A.M. & Joan slept until 11 - 1907 Study Club – I went by to see about Marzelle, Bradley called – She was sick – Got her settled. 

 Tuesday 11/12/1946 Town – picture show in evening. 

 Wednesday 11/13/1946 Round Table Dinner at Colonial – Bridge afterwards. 

 Thursday 11/14/1946 Town – just about have my Xmas shopping done – Burseys for Bridge in evening. 

 Friday 11/15/1946 Sis & Joan, Suzanne & Pamela Johnson left early this morn for Zoe’s in Weatherford to stay all day – raining & cold – LONESOME – I make more fruit cake. 

 Saturday 11/16/1946 Elsie & kids came down for Shrine Circus. A.M. Joan & Geo went with her. Joan’s first circus – the only thing she could see was the Babies around her & the dogs. 

 Sunday 11/17/1946 Ol Geo. & I went to a picture show. 

 Monday 11/18/1946 Town – took Joan & Grandma down town in new Chevrolet to see Xmas windows & Santa. She (Joan) still couldn’t see a thing but babies. 

 Tuesday 11/19/1946 Joan hasn’t slept good for several nights – Too much excitement (s) 

 Wednesday 11/20/1946 Day Club at Mrs. Bursey’s. Ol went to Childress to take Nora Bishops father – home late. 

 Thursday 11/21/1946 Twiss took us to Boat Club for dinner. Also Jim McCaul’s. Ol gave me new mix master. Garden Club met today. I’m hostess, also gave the program. 

 Friday 11/22/1946 Trying to pick up. Lecture Dorthy Biddle Flower Arrangement 

 Saturday 11/23/1946 Coffee with Neta 

 Sunday 11/24/1946 Pour tea at Glen Garden for Tea for Winnie – Grand Reo of Arizona –Circus at night. Helbings & Burseys – Took them to dinner – Earnest Jr. went with us – He’s just back from Japan. 

 Monday 11/25/1946 Dallas flower judging – Mildred *Mones – Staying at Baker Hotel. *Mones? 

Tuesday 11/26/1946 Marzelle operated – Dallas – course was hard but think I passed. It’s cold. Came home found A.M. had burned seat out of new Chevrolet. Wonder the house & everyone wasn’t burned – we’re thankful. See ref. to “new Chevrolet” TEN days earlier. 

Wednesday 11/27/1946 Home Coming at School – dinner – dance 

 Thursday 11/28/1946 Thanksgiving lunch with Ma – football game – Elsie & Ralph went with us – We took supper – We one over Paschal – Claire Barricks got in for lunch. Should have been Northside Homecoming game. 

Friday 11/29/1946 Picked up – Marvin & Elbertine left for California golf match. 

 Saturday 11/30/1946 Coffee with Neta & stayed in afternoon with Marzelle who’s in hospital. 

 Sunday 12/1/1946 Work all day 

 Monday 12/2/1946 Laundry 

 Tuesday 12/3/1946 Hair done – Staying over at the house all I can. 

 Wednesday 12/4/1946 Day Club at Nep’s I won high – Night Club here. 

 Thursday 12/5/1946 Staying with Ma 

 Friday 12/6/1946 Went football game in Dallas – lots of fun. Ol, Gene Elder, Francis Jarvis, Martha Anne & Me took Food we won – Jack went with yell leaders. Playoff game #1 

Saturday 12/7/1946 Coffee – Winnie & Mary went to Shreveport yesterday. I took them to train. 

 Sunday 12/8/1946 Worked all day – Ol had out of town funeral. 

 Monday 12/9/1946 1907 Study club – Marzelle came home from hospital. 

 Tuesday 12/10/1946 Sewed all day with Ma most of time – Ol has out of town funeral – stuck in mud 3 times – raining & bad. 

 Wednesday 12/11/1946 Hair dress – Night Club at Wyatt’s. 

 Thursday 12/12/1946 Christmas program at Women’s Club 

 Friday 12/13/1946 Laundry Kiwanis Banquet – nice party Saturday 12/14/1946 Foot Ball game in Dallas – N.S. & Highland Park – Ol took bunch of girls – I kept Joan & George – Highland Park won. Playoff game #2  

 Sunday 12/15/1946 Ol went to Taylor on funeral, came home with terrific headache. Suffered alnight. I went to council fire. I made Georges’ Santa Clause suit – Jack had to milk. 

 Monday 12/16/1946 Dr. Helbing gave Ol the works – headache better – Joan has bad tonsils – I doctored all day. Jack & I having to milk & we don’t like it. 

 Tuesday 12/17/1946 Ol better – I addressed Xmas Cards all day – bad weather – These days are sure blue ones for us – wish we could sleep thru Xmas. Son, Bill died suddenly a year ago at age 15. 

 Wednesday 12/18/1946 Christmas Day Club at Mrs. Helbings – Mrs. Parker had my name, nice apron – Ol still in bed. I went to school in eve to see George as Santa’s helper – Ollie & Glenn seem ok. 

 Thursday 12/19/1946 Bad day – I didn’t go to Garden Club or Mattie Jane’s either – Stayed home all day. Ol went to work – Scout or Cub meeting in eve – Jack went with Geo. 

 Friday 12/20/1946 Mrs. Helbing’s birthday – Beautiful day – Mailed cards – Finished Ma’s bed shoes – Alice M. & girls have their Xmas party – Jack goes to formal dance – Betty Jo Reid. Is it formal dance or forman dance. 

 Saturday 12/21/1946 Coffee with Neta – Worked all day – One of the new emergency cars made it’s first runs today – It’s really red – took kids to see Santa – They loved it. 

 Sunday 12/22/1946 Worked all day Don’t seem to get things done. 

 Monday 12/23/1946 Worked again all day. 

 Tuesday 12/24/1946 Took Ma to cemetaries – Jack went with us – It sure was hard to take. Ma did fine – Elsie, Ralph and kids came down late – Winnie stayed alnight . Bill would have been 16 today. Must have visited Bill’s grave at Mt Olivet. Bill had died a year earlier on Dec. 27, ’45. 

Wednesday 12/25/1946 We had a quiet day – Winnie stayed alnight with us again – dinner at Ma’s – We all talked to Ollie & Glenn in Cambridge Mass. 

 Thursday 12/26/1946 Every thing makes me think of Bill – Winnie & Mary had Ol & I over for rabbit – they have been wonderful to us & poor Winnie is blue. 

 Friday 12/27/1946 Can’t do much today – Winnie & Mary came over to dinner – Took us to picture show. 

 Saturday 12/28/1946 Coffee with Neta – Kept Joan last night – Sis & Geo went to show. 

 Sunday 12/29/1946 Cooked lunch & just milled around – Ol has to work, Edna Reids’ grandmother died yesterday. 

 Monday 12/30/1946 Ol works hard all day. Eggnog at Mattie June Muse Farley’s. Tuesday 12/31/1946 Snow this morn. Everything white – Joan has rash – too much grape fruit. That is the last entry in the four year diary.
