Monday
7/1/1946
Laundry. Still have Mildred first 3 days in week (maid) 3 a day from 9to 5. Sewed some, found dress had been cut wrong.

Probably THE dress she saw in OK.

lsabelle Lewis flying in today from L.A. C. Arrived at 11:16 P.M.
Hair dress – got remaining crystal for Ollie.

Alice M. & Isabelle went to town most all day.
We are getting some cute letters from Ollie.

7/4/1946
Went to Bandys for swim – Aunt Betty Priddy came by for short visit – Looks good. A.M. & Isabelle & Geo. went to show. I stayed home & kept Joan. Nice quiet 4th.

7/5/1946
Isabelle leaves at twelve today. A.M. bought new black dress while Isabelle was here. Also bought black suit today. My bills are so large I can’t possibly pay them.

Ol, Geo. & I went to picture show. It was good. A.M. just goes down & charges. This will be another month I can’t get myself anything.

I am doing A.M. an injustice by letting her charge things & when I say something about it she thinks she is abused. You can’t talk to her at all.

Ol leaves this morn for Galveston fishing. I have started another diet. If I eat anything at all I gain two lbs.

Sewed some but feel bad so had a nap. Lost two lbs. on new diet but had to quit it. Will try again soon.

Ol back from fishing. No luck, I went to town shopping.

Plenty hot today – feel retched.

Coffee with Neta. Ol has out of town funeral – suffers from heat. He’s trying to get his hay bailed & the lots on hyway filled in.

That’s how she spelled highway.

Ol has to work at office. I cooked all day.

Laundry – Ol leaves for Eureka Springs to get Mrs. Elder who has had heart attackt. Winnie & I went to show.

I worked all day long sorting dried peas.

Hair don, Wed. Bridge starts today with Mrs. Bursey. I didn’t win & it was hot. Sis has back ache. Geo. goes to Bruce’s birthday. Poor Bill always enjoyed it so.

Elsie, Elbertine, Winnie, Mary & I went to Dallas. All they did was drink beer. It was sure hot.

Feel terrible – legs hurt – so I tried to stay off them.

Cleaned house – Coffee with Neta – Ol & I went to show – saw Winnie & Mary – Took them with us. Ol had to work afterwards. Jack off.

Winnie goes to hospital tonight. We went by to see her. Too A.M. by botanic Garden to see about her Japanese exhibit she has up. Then Ol & I ate out – He gets mad at the least little thing.

Went to hospital to be with Winnie. She really had an operation, bad……

A.M. had pearls Geo sent her set in ear rings – she had ears pearced, & I just can’t hardly put them in. She & girls are going to Dallas to opera tonight. Infantile Paralysis – 89 for year.
Lila Smith passed away today.

Hair done – Club Garrisons – Ol & I ate out.

Mrs. Elder died this morning – Lila Smith’s funeral – Winnie feeling fine.

Alice M. got box of nice things from Geo.

I am going to stay with Winnie from 3:p.M. to 11 today. She doesn’t have a nurse for that time –

Cooked nearly all day – Ol & I are sleeping outside. It’s wonderful.

Luncheon at Swannie Armstrong’s for Dave Pumphrey’s sisters – Enjoyed it. Ol & I went to Helbings for Barbecue chicken – Have new stove for outside.

Jack working hard at office – got home for lunch – made them choc. Pie. Neta made cake for dinner – Jack had surprise party at Sargens Fellowship
Butch still here. I let him & Geo. to picture show.

What Fellowship? Couldn’t quite make it out.
This Butch should be Elsie’s son.

(s)Club at Neps. Mrs. Helbing went with me. I felt numb all over. Alice M. worried about situation in China for Geo. Paper says communist are fighting Marines.

Stayed in bed all day – Sure felt rotten – Fired maid. She wasn’t very good.
Ol still working on filling in lots. Hardly ever goes to office. Hay cost us this time.

Neta’s birthday. I cooked cake, didn’t do much else but worked all day. Can’t get a thing done. A.M. Heard from Geo. She feels a little better. She’s taking kids to play minature golf. Don & Kay, Geo. & Butch.

Cooked – talked to Elsie – She will be down tomorrow – Ol & Jack make country funeral.

Dreamed all night – Ollie called. She’s a little home sick. Sure glad to talk to her- Said she was just sitting waiting??

Hair do – Bought 2 new dresses, 2 new hats. Getting ready to go see Ollie – We have to pick up Cadallac Amb. in Cincinnati, so just going on up to see the kids. Can’t wait.

Worked all day – Had the Jim McCauls, Geo Mellinas, Chas. Twiss, Carl Shanks, G.A. Chestnuts over for barbecued chicken & beer – fine. Joan got her first hard bump.

Washed, iorned, had hair done p Marzelle called. Her mother real bad. Sat up with her most all night. Iorned for Marzelle. Claire B. came in today.

Packed bags – Got ready – Caught the 3:30 limited for Washington. We had drawing room – Slept for 2 ½ hr. after getting cool. It was 106° Ft. Worth

How nice it is to get cooled off and just eat, sleep & read & ride – We are reading the “Egg & I”. St. Louis this morning raining & cool – Wearing light coat.

Lite coat in August? Was this Washington state or DC?

Mrs. Amyette passed away about 11 A.M. Ollie met us at station about 7:45 A.M. Gee but she looked good – Took in Smithsonian in Maryland – Dinner with Mrs. Keegan & children. She sure looked sad without husband.

Who is Mrs. Amyette?

I went straight to bed. Ollie, Glen, Ol & boy talked w= until about 12 midnight – Friday, Glen took day off – We saw sights – Ollie manages beautiful grand dinner – We left for Cincinatti about 6:30 P.M. – raining – cool.

Factory picked us up , took us to factory. The Amb is beautiful Cadillac – Mr. Eisenhardt took us to lunch, then we stayed at Cincinatti Club – Wired kids to call us about going home.

Joan one year old today – Gave her pearls. They couldn’t get off , think they can come a few days later. Left Cin. 7:30 – raining & cool – lovely – drove to Rolla, Missouri first. Night, stayed at Pennault Hotel again – the nicest place on Rd. I ate salad plate – shouldn’t …..

Supper gave me poison. Feel bad – Drove on to Muscogee, Okla. It’s getting hot & dry. I slept nearly all the way today because I feel terrible.

Feel better – Didn’t eat much – got home about 3:30 – Everything worked out fine, except Elbertine tried to boss the kids while we were gone – Marvin’s birthday.

Sis received jewels from friend of Georges passing through – Had been with him – just a mo. ago. She had nice day. I washed all day – Ollie trying to call us, didn’t make it. Geo. jumped over beds in back yard. Cut his forhead open to bone.
Had wedding invitation from Dick Cody….good.

Geo jumped over beds in yard and cut a gash to the bone just over the right eye. I thought he was killed. Dr. Bursey took 3 stitches. It’s still hot & dry.

It must have really scared her into a double entry.

Coffee with Neta – Cleaned house – Barretts, I.P. & R.L. here for dinner – brought boys.

Cooked & Ol & Jack didn’t get home for lunch. Went to Elaine McDonald’s wedding reception at Colonial. It was so hot, I was sick.

Did the laundry – made pear preserves – was so tired I couldn’t sleep. Some tired.

Shirley & J.B. came over to dinner with Sis. Had hair done, took Geo to town for lunch – Bought him shoes, then Dr. Bursey took stitches out. Ol & I ate out at dinner – Saw the J.B. Pumphrey’s.

Rain at last. Florence Mae has Wed Club. I go sit & act like a dummy. Why do I go? Sis goes to picture show tonight with Betty Lou.

Did laundry again – Had spoon bread – good – Joan has fever caused from vaccination 103.3°. Ol & I went to the Burks to play cards. Sis went to town today with Shirley.

Clean house all day – Coffee with Neta – Claire comes in. Let George have cook out in park. All kids in neighborhood – Jack & Lanelle & Claire – Jack has flat later – I have to take him tire.

Sis is trying to work up case of nerves so Geo can come home & she’s succeeding – Nothing pleases her. She terribly abused – She has never had anything in her whole life.

Labor day – raining – I’m picking up laundry – the hardest rain we have had since the flood. Took material for Ollie’s two comforts to be tacked.

Cleaned house & kept Joan. Sis went to town – More rain. Bought a new cow today – Sold our other one – Sure hated to bus she was getting old.

New cow gives more milk but it isn’t as rich. Night Club here. Sis went to Rilda to get Joan’s pictures. Jack cleaning off hill side. He quit the office yesterday.

Town Cox opening, bought me a new suit & shoes. Really dressed up. Ol & I age out tonight – Saw everyone at cafateria.

Washed, ironed, cleaned - Sis, Shirley & I went to dressmakers – Tried to find Joan some shoes.

She spelled it (ironed) right this time.

(s)Worked all day – picture show in eve – Sis, Ol & I. Jack kept Joan. Beautiful day.

Worked all day & seemed to get things shaped up better – A.M. & Shirley gadded all day. I went to town late to check on table cloths Cunam have lost a cut work one for me & they don’t seem to be doing anything about it.

Jack & Geo start to school – Had wire from Ollie & Glen – They are leaving tomorrow for Boston – U.S.S. Ellington.

Day Club Mrs. Parker’s (here instead) Mrs. Parker sprained her ankle. A.M. & I went to Bobby Magoffin’s wedding & reception. A.M. Pre Schooled all day. She is better satisfied since she’s busy.

Ol has another conflab with Pa – Makes Ol feel pretty Bad. Pa says Ol is grasping & thieving. Who’s kettle is black?

Letter today from Ollie – there in Boston. Also have Glen’s card showing change of address – He’s going across – We wired them to phone us.

Betty Lou Schick taking Sis out for dinner & show. Ollie called today – They are looking for apt. – Think they will be there until first of year. Says they are fine. A.M. is cleaning getting things done – Easier for me to keep house – Ol’ having to work at nights – Short of men – they are all in school.

Cooked all morn – Drove out around Azle to see how the farms were looking – Ol & I went to a early show – Had dinner down town. Sis staying alnight with Shirley – J.B.’s gone to N.Y. I’m keeping Joan.

Started my fall house cleaning today – cleaned clothes closets. Ol & * went to Mattie Jane Farley’s for chocolate pie.

Jack & Geo went to Sunday School. Pa & Geo. & Ol had run in – Everyone mad – Pa leaves in car 6:30 – Phone rings – Pa killed in auto accident – Everyone sorry, too late. Oh what temper will do!

Pa’s funeral 10:30 at Chapel. Dr. Anderson the minister – Bill has someone with him now.

Ol kinda lost – doesn’t know where to start in, just carrying on – Ma’s is all right. She’s fine.

Working on cards, and staying at the house as much as we can.

Went to town to find Glen birthday gift so we can get box off to them so they will get it before they move.

Ol has to work part of day – Lunch, coffee with Neta, coffee & cake at Ma’s in afternoon – He has tie shower – I hid all his old ones. Everyone doing fine.

Today is a hard day on the family – We are all trying to hold our temper and be nice to each other – It has worked so far. Sis & Joan have colds. No word from Geo. Lewis.

Sis got a letter from Geo – He is still at the same old place – Thinks he’s going to Peking. Joan & I stayed with Ma while Elbertine goes to Dr.
