January, February, and March of 1946

Couldn’t do much – Cards & flowers still coming in.

Had to get my hair done. I had washed it in Lysol. Went to store. Saw everyone. Will try to stay in for a while. Claire left this afternoon for Dallas. Hate to see her go.

“Washed it in Lysol” probably to disinfect after Bill’s spinal meningitis.

Answering flowers& cards. Just a week today seems like forever. Just can’t realize we won’t have Bill coming in.

Just cleaning out. Feel terrible. Claire Barricks came over from Dallas.

Worked all day. Can’t get a thing done. So gittery I can’t stand my self. Just went to bed. Claire went back to Dallas.

Ol & I & Geo. went to Burseys farm, then to see Ma. Kids stayed home. We cleaned out boy’s rooms. Put George in – in Bill’s place. Gave Ollie his clothes closet. Glen left tonight for Galveston.

Had hair done. Shopped – Got scarf for Lillian, maid at office. She helped me with Bill – 2 pair nylons for Mildred Stewart – She was with Bill when he passed away – Also Dr. Barrett

Went to see Mary McClure. She lost her brother in Austin.

Went to see Ma in hospital. She’s better. Kept Joan today & washed all day. Mr. Wilkinson from J.P. Elder School brought me some pictures of Bill – there grand.

Glenn here for week end. Not much out of Ollie. I ironed & cleaned. Dinner with Bursey’s.

Stayed home all morning. Went to see Ma. She’s better. All the kids are settled except Bill doesn’t come in. Seems like I can’t stand it.

Rain, cold. Stayed home & sewed all day. Mrs. Clifton came to work.

Still raining. Still staying in.

Hair done. Then bought 2 coats & a hat today. Haven’t had any clothes for so long. Everyone fusses at me but don’t want any. Club at Barretts. Ma comes home today.

Garden Club. Everyone lovely. Lella, Ester Ruth & I rode around lake. Such a ride. Ma coming along alright

Ol, Winnie & I went to Meridian to Mrs. McIntyre’s grandmother’s funeral. Winnie comes home with us and stays alnight. We go to see Jack in Gay 90’s. It’s good.

Raining again. Glenn came in Thurs. for few days. Dr. Helbing coming for dinner. Mrs. Helbing out of town.

Just cooked & washed dishes. Listened to radio. Jack president of Fellowship for St. John’s this year.

Mrs. Clifton came today. We picked up. Weather is bad. Geo home with cold.

Mrs. Clifton came again today. Sent laundry out. Geo. went to school. Snowed – Ol & I went to see “Bells of St. Mary’s” in afternoon.

No Mrs. Clifton. Geo home. I had hair done. Sinus bad, dryer helps. A.M. takes Joan to Helbing. She gets some veg. now.

Geo goes to school. Just pick up & cook. Armstrongs asked us out for dinner at Angelic’s French Kitchen. Food good. They had had too much.

Geo home until Monday mid term. Went to meeting for Garden club Show. We are all enthused about meeting place. We’re going to try to get Kiwanis to buy.

Jack & date attended Dance at Colonial. Got in too late. Canteen first time since Xmas Day. Wind blowing & its cold. Jane Webb came last night for week end. I am keeping Joan while they play.

Glenn’s here also. I cooked all morning & slept all P.M. Ol had country funeral. Pa has bad cold. Ma up some around house.

Jack home. Ollie stayed out of school to see Glen off to Washington. Joan has cold. I am going to 1907 Study Club. Elected 1st Vice Pres. Of 1907 Study Club.

Michael Bonner gets married. Coffee with Neta for first time since we lost Bill & Ma has been sick. I took her down in car. Worked in yard & sewed. Claire came for week end.

Cooked all morning. Lella & I called on Thelma Brooks Farrell. Mrs. Brooks passed away.
Rain. Ol & I took Geo. to picture show. Girls go in eve. I keep Joan. Jack goes to church.

Ollie & I went shopping. Ol & I went to Patrol party at Ernest Allen’s. We left early. I couldn’t be happy & join in the fun. Our hearts are so heavy. Everyone has been wonderful, but they can’t bring Bill back to us.

I made Book Review at 11 A.M. By Rev Sherwood Clayton, at Hoyt Baird’s Girls Service League. I was guest of Fay Allen’s Spaghetti dinner. Worked in yard.

Sewed all day. House is up side down. Ol called & I went to Dallas with him 5:30 for casket.

Cleaned house all day. Washed & iorned. Claire Tuoy Spends night with Ollie. Ol goes to Patrol. Joan cuter every day.

Isabelle due this morn. Arrived about 5:15 A.M. She and Joan got acquainted at once. Lester Baker killed in airplane crash in California.

Isabelle is Joan’s other grandmother.

We all went to Dallas – met Mrs. Webb & Jane for lunch. Visited shops. Came home. Sam Gilbert Ward passed away with heart attackt.

“attackt” that’s the way she spelled it.

I am hostess for S.S. party at Mattie Jane Farley’s. Mr. Ward was buried.

Isabelle left this morning. We had Joan’s mole removed with radium. It was a nest of red veins in a mass. She has her first tooth also today.

Bought shrubs for Fain Reynolds new home & Oscar Wyatt new home for Club. Club met with Reynolds tonight.

Ol & I left for Port Aransas. Made it in 9 ½ hrs. Stayed at Tarpon Inn.

Weather too bad to fish. I slept & ate.

Sat. Went out early to fish. Caught the first Jack Fish of the season. Ol is having it mounted. We both caught lots of Jacks.

(s) More Jacks today. Saw the first Tarpons. I fish of mornings & sleep in afternoons.

I had 1907 Study Club. Lillian Came up at 4:15 P.M. to help. Girls went to show.

Hair done. Canteen in morning. Geo. has tummy ache. Little temp all night.

Geo. goes to hospital has appendix removed 2 P.M. It has ruptured just a little. Dr. put tube in side. Mighty sick little boy. Just 3 mo. to the day since we lost Bill.



Thursday

Stayed alnight at hospital. Geo. feels fine. Still a little woozy. Mary McClure came last night. Stayed a while.

Ol stayed at hospital last night. Nurse came. Geo. better.

Geo. better. He has lots of flowers, 7 boxes of candy, cards, books, games & Grandad brought a cowboy hat. Nurse still comes from 10 P.M. to 7 A.M.

Grandad: I guess is Oliver. First granddaughter is about nine months old at this point.

Tube removed. Brought Geo. home today. He didn’t want to come home. He will miss the nurse. Jack confirmed in Episcopal Church.

I think Anne is right about "Grandad" being S.D. Shannon. I din't think there is anything unusual aborht J. Oliver Shanon buying a cowboy hat. I still have two in my closet. Munnie is talking about George getting gifts after his appendectomy. His grandad of course is S.D. Shannon.
