April, May, & June 1943

Sunday School meeting at church didn’t go had lunch downtown with Margret Petteway & Ester Ruth Sharp, shopped & had a flat tire.

Worked in yard.

Worked in yard coffee with Neta, George L. in for supper, Ol &I went to see “Yankee Doodle Dandy”

George L in for lunch, Ollie & Boys drove to lake, Oliver worked & I slept all afternoon

George S got his last whooping cough serium

Ol & the boys have a fine victory garden, I did the laundry

Victory Gardens were one of the fashionable of patriotic things that people did during WWII.

Worked in yard all day, Attended Dinner at Texas, plan for Funeral Directors Convention.

Worked in yard all morning, celebrated Winnies Birthday (yesterday) Coffee at Neta’s. Melvin’s girl friend, Ruth Upchurch, stays alnight with us. (So does Neno)

Easter Sunday School, Kids gave me a lovely cosarge of Red Roses, White Kid gloves & George Lewis who is spending his furlough with his mother sent me a boquet of spring flowers & Alice M an orchid. George Shannon certainly got a kick out of Easter more than Xmas.

Did the laundry. The painters started in on the outside of the house George S told the one painting screens, when he had done painted about 1/3 of them “ you need not think you are through, all these windows have screens”

Jack to the Dentist at 9:30. I feel Dr. Helbing at 2 P.M. refers me to specialist instead I go to Dr. Bursey

Night club at Barretts.

Went to see Dr. Bursey says I must be operated (repair) will have it done. Sometime in June after the boys are out of school. Jack takes sick food poison.

Canteen feeds soldiers at Farrington Field. George S & I take violently ill from food poisoning.

Why were the soldiers at Farrington field, a fine WPA project?

In bed all day – Ol waters garden – Girls stay home from work to take care of the sick ones.

George L. returns from trip home. Is A.M. happy, Spends the rest of furlough with us.
Ol finishes watering garden. Works all day.

Jack has been real sick, better today, George S. & I are better.

Jack still can’t keep a thing on stomach. Painters still here. Everything torn up & everyone sick.

George S. comes in sick, doesn’t want to eat. Gave George L. a Birthday supper. He seems to have enjoyed it. A.M. made cake.

Mother’s Day – Kids gave me an orchid, Ol a dress & was I dressed up for the John Colliers 25th Anniversary party at River Crest. We ate at Crosses later, then went to show

Jack back in school, George really sick. I did the laundry.

Flower show, club at Bursey’s. I really dressed up for them tonight. Painters have finished if we can just get the house straight.

George has Jandice & he is sue sick. Worked in house all day. Ol brought up 1 bu. English Peas. George L. in for dinner.

Going on funeral with Ol down at Richland Springs. Nice trip, 5 hrs. down, 3 hrs. back.

Hair dresser, worked in Canteen at Santa Fe. Ollie has a foursome in Bridge, George L. here for dinner

Ollie lift for El Tesoro to council one week. Jack is studying choire work at Episcopal Church. Father Claytons from 8 to 10. Boys are throwing Star Telegram.

Getting boys ready for Boy Scout Camp. Just can’t get a thing done.

Alice M. and George L. have dinner out.

George L. here every night. Expects to be moved any day. Boys left for Scout Camp, to be gone a week. Father’s Day Ollie in from camp.

Ollie is leaving for camp by bus, Camp Ojiketa Chicago City Minn. Poor kid, a hard trip but her mind is made up. George Lewis also left today for Cherry Point, N. Carolina

This is certainly a quiet place, just George, Alice M, Ol and myself. Canned corn today.

Can’t seem to get anything done, just wandering around. Received card from Ollie today, written Wed. eve. Durant, Okla.

Got a wire from Ollie. She made it ok. Coffee with Neta, made pair pajamas for myself.

What a hot lazy day. Slept most of it. Boys came home from camp, brown as Mexicans.

Canned tomatoes. Tried to buy steak for dinner. No good stk. On market, peaches 5.00 Bu. The heat is still with us.



Tuesday

Ida came and cleaned house, it rained hard. I tried to work, had to stop. Tried to keep my appointment with beauty parlor, they had trouble with plumbing, & I had a flat tire. What a day.

Washed, canned tomatoes, drive in picture show in eve, just Ol & me. Letter from Ollie, she likes Minnesota.
