April, May & June of 1946

Geo. fine. I washed all day. Canteen closed last Saturday night and am I glad

“Canteen closed” marks the end of the war for Munnie. American Red Cross “Canteen Corps served snacks and meals at docks, airports, railroad stations, military posts, and at Red Cross blood donor centers, childcare centers, and schools, mostly in the United States. Over the course of the war 163 million cups of coffee, 254 million doughnuts, and 121 million meals were served by the Canteen Corps (105,571 volunteers in 1942-43).”

Still too rough to go out, but boys tried it. Ol landed that TARPON – 6 ft. 2in. - we were all thrilled. He was worn out – took him 1 hr. 39 min.

Left Port Aransas 8 P.M. – had lunch San Marcos. I stopped over in Austin for State Flower Meeting – had hair done. Read - kids called - Slept

Got up at 7 as usual – breakfast – back to room 0 shopped – read – lunch – read. Waiting for Lella, Mrs. Helbing, Mrs. Emile Lewis, Velma Vinsant. They brought my Car back. They arrived about 3 P.M.

Attended morning session, Luncheon at University, Dinner banquet in eve at hotel – Picture show – Sad, we all cried – Clark Gabel – Greer Garson last night – saw another tonight at mid-nite review.

M’liss says "There were 12 Artrey kids." A couple of steets in Keller still bear the name.

Hair done – Shopped again – Aunt Addie’s funeral at Birdville – Night Club at Lollie Wyatt’s – Had dinner – I went to sleep. Ol won orchid at Round Table.

Barbecue at Carl Shanks. Oliver told me tonight I have made him most unhappy. I am his biggest disappointment because of my coolness. I have tried harder than anything in this world but I just can’t help it.

Alice Marie Lewis & Thelma Shannon gave a stork shower for Margie Burks (Mrs. Jack Burks).
Work behind – sent Alice Marie to get cakes to serve – They were late, she waited, I finished in kitchen, cleaning her room – Gave bottle to Joan Lewis – I strip getting ready for bath, heard gurgle, gurgle – Joan bit the top off nipple & poured the milk out in her bed & was slushing. I spanked her good. Changed ends with bed. Took my bath, just 30 min. before guests arrive. Lillian, (Maid from Office) saunters in to help. Alice M. comes home, maid feeds Joan – A.M. has to bathe self & Joan. Every one here – Margie is surprised – Start playing game – Mrs. C.C. Cross says, “Thelma, the shower is in the wrong place.” Water was streaming down upon her. Elbertine Shannon & I rushed up stairs found Geo Shannon leisurly singing in the shower in my bathroom with curtain on outside of tub. Wanted to know what he had done & did I tell him. Marzelle had my milk pans catching the water. The shower was just a little miss placed was all.

Took A.M. & Geo. Shannon to see “Week End at Waldorf Astoria”. Geo. says “That girl is just like the other on in a show he saw last week. She couldn’t cook either.”

CPO Glenn Stewart, USN was previously un-mentioned in the diary. We was home on medical furlough after Indy sinking. Suni said “She remembered his blue eyes from NSHS but needed AM’s help with the name.”

Glenn comes up for lunch 0 We all like him fine – We are proud of our girls for picking such fine sons in law for us. Open house at Dr. A.B. Pumphreys. Kids went to parties.

Birthday party for Bill - Had family down for dessert – Bill ate ¾ of lemon pie – his favorite – He got everything he wanted for his Birthday – He’s so timid he would not let them kiss him – he was so thrilled.

Bill’s 15 birthday? Bill is middle child of Oliver & Thelma Shannon.

Xmas at house – Ma & Pa sick – Open house there all day – Boys didn’t eat dinner, We took them to Jo Moor’s on our way to Bursey’s open house, then picked them up – We went to Cleveland to open house – came home – Bill had cleaned up his room & Clothes closet – put his gifts all away – abut 10 P.M. he came in with chill but wasn’t cold.

We worked with Bill all night – He was so sick – At 11A.M. his fever went to 106.2 – We rushed him to Hosp. His head hurt terribly, but we kept his fever down. I stayed all night at Hosp. Ol stayed until he was easy & I made him go home.

Ol back at hosp. by 5 A.M. I came home, slept some – they were to do a spinal puncture so I went back – I had terrible dream. Bills temp was normal at noon but he was worried about his eyes. They hurt & so did his head. Ollie, Jack & Glenn stayed at Hosp. some in aft, then Ol came back. Spinal puncture was such a shock to him, fever shot up – took 5 to hold him in bed. Mildred Stewart came on & Dr. Barrett came over. Ol takes me home to tell me how bad he was, but we had barely gotten here when phone rang to come at once. Alice M. didn’t tell us he was gone. He died quietly. Our first loss – and such a fine boy – spinal meningitis.

(s) Found to be very contagious – Everyone took sulpha , and sent all the friends home. Claire Barricks was here & Glenn Stewart, Marzelle Burks & Mrs. Clifton. Made came from office. They stayed with us. Dr. & Mrs. Helbing came to help. Everyone was wonderful. Ma went to hospital under oxygen tent.

Funeral 10 A.M. – Bill was so fine looking – The chapel had more flowers than had ever been there – 360 people, cards, telegrams, food – Everything possible to show their interest. Glenn & Claire worked all day every day. The Hamms – Harry Pattons & McVeys went to cemetery regardless of contagion.

Had to get my hair done. I had washed it in Lysol. Went to store. Saw everyone. Will try to stay in for a while. Claire left this afternoon for Dallas. Hate to see her go.

“Washed it in Lysol” probably to disinfect after Bill’s spinal meningitis.
